Determined to rekindle their friendship, Margo invites Julianne to a weekend around the campfire—sparking combustive results.
You, Me, and the Woodsmoke is a gripping head-to-head between distant friends that aches to become a heart-to-heart with the natural world.
Set in a New England forest in early fall, artists and audiences gather under a tree-lined canopy to meet characters struggling to find harmony with themselves, each other, and the environment. Blending playful dialogue, puppetry, and a soul-shifting live soundtrack inspired by ’90s alt-rock, this immersive experience invites us to reconnect with our ever-changing ecosystem—and to confront what’s at stake if we let discomfort fester.

Development History
You, Me, and the Woodsmoke began in 2017 with early development after winning Prescott Park’s 30 Pages in 30 Days Competition, followed by a first draft which was submitted to development opportunities. Over the next several years, the piece underwent a rigorous dramaturgical process with Table Work Press, workshops with The Acadiana Repertory Company, and readings through The 24 Hour Plays and Dramatists Guild’s End of Play. It was a finalist for the 2022 Woodward/Newman New Play Award. In 2024, a sold-out workshop premiere at The Players' Ring was cut short by storm damage, prompting a renewed devising process with the expanded collective. The current iteration was shared with invited audiences in Spring 2025 and will be presented at the Radically Rural Conference in Fall 2025.
Step Into The Forest...
At its core, You, Me, and the Woodsmoke confronts a failed system: the extractive relationship between humans and the natural world, upheld by colonial and capitalist frameworks that sever people from land, and community.
The play resists the myth of environmental destruction as an inevitable cost of progress—and centers the often-dismissed emotional labor of women who grieve, care, and lead through relational rather than institutional power. Without preaching, the piece quietly lifts up intuitive, nonlinear forms of climate response—asking what might change if we trusted the wisdom in our discomfort.
